Abdulrasheed Bawa - Reformer Focused on Corruption in Nigeria

Based in Abuja, Nigeria, Abdulrasheed Bawa served as chairman of the nation’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from 2021 to 2023. Focused on rooting out corruption, he pursued a multifaceted strategy that spanned prosecution, reform, prevention, and youth empowerment. The youngest professional to ever head the commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa coordinated efforts that resulted in numerous convictions. He also partnered internationally in recovering stolen assets.

Originally from Kebbi State, Mr. Bawa attended the Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto, where he earned degrees in economics and international affairs and diplomacy. He accepted responsibilities with the EFCC in 2004 and was integral to groundbreaking efforts that instilled transparency and accountability across government agencies.

Mr. Bawa is author of the book The Shadow of Loot & Losses: Uncovering Nigeria's Petroleum Subsidy Fraud. In this book, he reveals just how audacious perpetrators have been in misusing public funds through large-scale fuel subsidy payment scams. He also details methods by which significant assets were recovered and those who were culpable were brought to justice.
